As week 7 approaches, I had the chance to look back over the last few weeks and take the opportunity to see how I have grown in regards to music, styles of music, meaning behind the music, and so on. While I am pretty open to many genres of music, this course allowed me to sit and actually take in the different genres. I was able to explore the different sounds and beats of each style of music as well. Week one started off with the early sounds of the blues. I explored and listened to sings like, Robert Johnson, â€Å"Cross Roads Blues† and Catherine Russell, Crazy Blues. I enjoyed Robert Johnson’s â€Å"Cross Roads Blues†, but my reaction was that Robert Johnson did not come off as the star of the song. He sang his verses over the guitar, however in my opinion, it seems like the guitar is the â€Å"star† of the song versus the artist singing. I also found it a bit difficult to find the chorus in the song and therefore it really didn’t draw me in. Catherine Russell’s Crazy Blues, had more of an effect on me. I thought it had the perfect balance between instrument, the piano, and Catherine Russell singing. Catherine Russell has an amazing voice and this song allowed her to showcase it. Also, because the piano didn’t overpower the song, I could clearly understand the lyrics and it made me want to hear the whole song to hear how the â €Å"story† of the song ended. A Different World Essay Since I can remember I’ve always had an itch to not only see the world but wonder it and socialize with different people, as well to try different and strange food. This is why I not only admire but look up to the one and only god of mine Anthony Bourdain. After watching what seem to me his entire traveling journey on TV. I had decided to take a shot at reading one of his best known books Kitchen Confidential. All I can say is that it not only blew my mind but opened it as well. About two years ago my family would have told you that I lost my mind due to a random traveling decision that I made. I wanted to feel and see what was outside of the norm of my day to day life. My journey started with Puerto Rico and yeah some people may think it’s like traveling to South Beach in Florida. But no I decided to stay in the mountain country side of it. I stayed in a small hut up in the mountain area no AC or hot water and of course no reception. Meaning no I phone usage, no wifi and the worst of it all no facebook or instagram bummer right. Not really if I wanted to experience what it felt to be an actual living citizen of Puerto Rico, I had to do it right. The first night sucked just because I’m so use to entertaining myself with my phone at all time. It was crazy seeing so many stars and hearing silence at night. But one thing that I did admire so much about the Puerto Rican culture was the peacefulness that they carry with them. It looked to me as if everyone was as ease and without any stress. Even as I notice people working and living their regular lives, just happy. What was amazing was actually seeing people hold actual conversations with one another and no phone were seen anywhere. I grew up knowing that once I became an adult that it would be my turn to take care of my elderly family members. But nothing was more culture shocking till my experience in Honduras in a small city named El Progresso. It brought me to tears to see how young poor adults worked so hard to just make sure either parents or grandparents were well taken care of. It made think how rich people in our society are so quick to send off their parents to nursing homes. Religion was something I wasn’t brought up with; we were more on spiritual side. As I traveled to Machu Picchu, I saw how much their culture respect their religion. It was weird how it would feel to walk into any open churches and you could feel something reflect off your body. Something I won’t forget is the look in their eyes with so much hope as they prayed to their saint. It was hard for me to understand how you could hope your life off a statue. But it was such an amazing sight to see how different their culture was from mine. Trying their food was something out of my norm, their delicacies was eating a giant guinea pig otherwise known as â€Å"cuy†. Pretty harsh especially coming from a different culture where these animals are kept as pets. Ending this journey was pretty sad it made not want to come home at all. After meeting such wonderful and good hearted people, I stop to think that yeah we come from such different cultures. But what is normal to them may seem odd to us and likewise. But if everyone were to be taken out of their comfort zone and left to see and hear what’s out there they wouldn’t think its so odd. Filippo Brunelleschi - Perspective In Art Perspective Use of perspective in art finds its root in one man, Filippo Brunelleschi. Although we dont know for sure, it is likely that Brunelleschi also invented linear, or scientific perspective. Donatellos The Feast of Herod is the earliest surviving example of scientific perspective, which is established through the use of a vanishing point, an imaginary single point on the page in which all the parallel lines meet. Donatellos Feast of Herod was a groundbreaking work by that days standards, and a complete failure in the fulfillment of compositional requirements of traditional classical or medieval standards. The focal point of the piece, the presentation of St. Johns head to Herod, is in the far left corner, and the crowd watching is clustered into the right corner. Upon examination of the action, however, Donatellos intention is clear; by placing the people in this way, the gesture and emotion of the scene is more implicit and effective. It is also more clearly established that the scene d oes not end at the focal point, it in fact continues off into every direction, an impression more clearly made with his use of scientific perspective. This window view into the scene was a radical step, and would influence how the picture plane was to be seen from that point on. Another important milestone in the history of perspective is Pietro Perudinos The Delivery of the Keys. Painted in 1482, this work employs a grave, symmetrical structure, a tool he used to emphasize the importance of the scene being represented: The authority of St. Peter as the first pope, and all of his successors, rests on his having received the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven from Christ himself. The onlookers are all rendered with powerfully individualized faces. Equally powerful is the vast expanse of the almost surreal background. The spatial clarity, established by the use of mathematically precise perspective, is the influence of Brunelleschi. Andrea Mantegna was another 15th century painter. He was a prodigy that rendered in paint with skill from the age of 16 on. With the painting St. James Led to His Execution Mantegna established himself as a person who wasnt afraid to break with traditional painting techniques, and adds a daring touch by painting from a ground up view of the scene. This was used because the painting was hung so tha the bottom of the painting was at the viewers eye level. Because of this the architecture looms intimidatingly, and is made more convincing by his use of scientific perspective.His desire for authenticity can be seen in every small detail, including the Roman soldiers costumes. It even extends to the use of wet drapery patterns, an invention of classical Greek sculpture that was then passed onto the Romans. We can also find a reference to Donatello in Mantegnas rendering of the lean, tense bodies of the Roman soldiers. The intensity that Mantegna establishes by using these techniques hardly fits the subject matter, as the condemned saint, on the way to his execution, stops to bless a paralytic man and command him to walk. The onlookers facial expressions and gesture hint at how deeply this sight has stirred them. Mantegna has even painted a violent scene erupting off to the right as the crowd becomes agitated. The 4 Gospels and their Themes The authors of the four gospels in the Bible had a specific group of people they wrote to and in this assignment I am going to look at those specific people and what the authors said about the life and work of Jesus. I am going to also going to look at the main themes of these four gospels, beginning from Matthew to John. The author of the book of Matthew is the Apostle Matthew who was one of Jesus` disciples. The gospel of Matthew was written in Greek. The author wrote to a particular group of people mainly Greek speaking Jews, even though the author wrote to certain group of people the writing does have a worldwide outlook. Matthew concentrated more on the fulfilment of the Old Testament than the writers of the other gospels. In Matthew Jesus teaching pointed to the blessings of the kingdom being extended to gentiles. CONCLUSION The four canonical gospels are very detailed and factual about the life and work of Christ. Matthew writing to prove to the Jews that Jesus is their Messiah, while Mark stressed the humanity of Jesus but he does not neglect His deity. Luke wanted to show that the place of the gentile Christian in Gods kingdom is based on the teachings of Jesus. Luke` main theme is the nature of Jesus Christ` messiah ship and mission. Plato and Augustine’s Conceptions of Happiness Essay -- Philosophy Essa

Both Plato and Augustine offer unusual conceptions of what one must acquire to live a truly happy life. While the conventional view of happiness normally pertains to wealth, financial stability, and material possessions, Plato and Augustine suggest that true happiness is rooted in something independent of objects or people. Though dissimilar in their notions of that actual root, each respective philosophy views the attaining of that happiness as a path, a direction. Plato’s philosophy revolves around the attainment of eternal knowledge and achieving a metaphysical balance. Augustine also emphasizes one’s knowing the eternal, though his focus is upon living in humility before God. Both assert that human beings possess a natural desire for true happiness, and it is only through a path to something interminable that they will satisfy this desire. In his several dialogues, Plato contends the importance of the four virtues: wisdom, courage, self-control, and justice. In The Republic, he describes a top-down hierarchy that correlates to the aspects of one’s soul. Wisdom, courage, and temperance preside control over the rational, spirited, and appetitive aspects of the soul. It is when one maintains a balance between these aspects of his soul that he attains peace within himself: â€Å"...And when he has bound together the three principles within him...he proceeds to act...always thinking and calling that which preserves and cooperates with this harmonious condition (Plato 443c).† Wisdom and knowledge consistently remain at the top of his view of happiness. During the apology, Plato is asked what punishment is best suited for him. He sarcastically answers, â€Å"to be fed...(It is) much more suitable than for any one who has won a v... ...ath is led by humility, directing one toward a better understanding of God. Perhaps it is not important, however, which source, if either, is the correct root of happiness, but merely that one’s source stretches beyond the margins of what is temporal. A violent crime occurs every 23.5 seconds in the United States of America. Even though crime has been at a low during the past decade, violence is still prevalent in today’s society. Most of these crimes happen in places that are socio-economically disadvantaged. There then is the debate of whether violent crime is associated with environments struck with poverty. There is a correlation between violent crimes and poverty because of the unemployment rates in major cities, the culture of poor areas, and drugs. There are three components that must be looked at before carrying on. They are: poverty, social inequality, and relative depravation. Poverty is defined according to an economic standard. A thousand years ago peasants and kings alike were drawn to the epic and often-heroic tales told by bards. Much like the modern audiences of movies today, these often-fantasized tales captivated their listeners and gave a microscopic glimpse into the culture of the medieval period. Today, there is no doubt that 21st century America is a vast and very divergent world than that of the writers of early British literature. However, nearly a thousand years after the original stories were written, American culture is still greatly influenced by these early Anglo-Saxon stories of heroism. Contemporary adaptations of these films combine these stories with the thrill of the dramatic cinema and the modern ideal’s of western culture to tame the†¦show more content†¦This ancient depiction of Grendel contrasts the contemporary version in the film. Gunnersson characterizes Grendel as human. In the clip it appears that Grendel is more of a â€Å"sasquatch,† a Neanderthal ty pe of man who is completely uncivilized, than a monster (Gunnersson, 2005). There were five characteristics of collaboration contributing to the professional teacher development. Collaboration is voluntary which means teachers should collaborate between them without any external forcing. This will improve the teaching process as unnecessary forcing may make them less interest and less confident, thus affecting the teaching process. Secondly, collaboration necessitates parity between participants (Parkay, 2016). It involves valuing each and every teachers contributions equally and giving them with equal power to make decisions in their teaching process. They should be given independence in guiding the students and the decisions of all the teachers should be considered equally. Thirdly, collaboration should be based on mutual teaching objectives. It is not necessary for the professional teachers to share all the goals for the sake of collaborating between others and it is enough to share only specific as well as more important goals to draw their shared attention. The teachers should collaborate with common objectives among them to enhance their professionalism. Ultimately, their aim should be to enhance student achievement (Quick, 2009). Fourthly, collaboration always depends upon shared responsibilities for participating in teaching and in decision- making process (Parkay, 2016). This will promote the feelings of ownership among professional teachers. Friend (2011) suggests that the persons who collaborate among other persons should share their responsibility for teaching outcomes. The professionals should work for a same teaching goal under same organizational pattern to achieve outcomes. A professional should take responsibility for either a positive out come or for a negative outcome. These characteristics of collaboration should be adapted by all the teachers to become an effective professional. Collaboration will promote professionalism among teachers that ultimately increases teaching outcomes. Approaches of teacher collaboration This part evaluates the four methods of teacher collaboration as peer- coaching, involvement by staff, team- teaching as well as co- teaching. The first technique of peer coaching involves the process of learning of the teacher from their peers or co- teachers. In olden days, experienced teachers will be teaching and guiding the newer teachers. But, it is insufficient in current era and requires mastered teaching and hence formalized peer- coaching helps to extend the collaboration between more teachers (Parkay, 2016). It helps the teachers to grow professionally and learn by observing others teaching and providing appropriate and constructive feedback. It helps the professional teachers to learn collaboratively in psychologically safer environment. It strives to create the professional educator communities and makes all the teachers in coaching team to be collaborative. Developing coaching teams and establishing coaching environment will make all the teachers to collaborate and eval uate each other (Scott, 2008). By this teacher interaction and collaboration, peer- coaching techniques will improve professional morale and teaching effectiveness, thus promoting professionalism in teaching. The second method to develop collaboration between teachers is staff development. Staff development encourages the teachers to design their own staff- development program that makes them as collaborator, risk- taker and experimenter in the teaching process. It helps the teachers to collaborate with their co- teachers of same grade that will motivate them to share ideas, opinions, suggestions, interventions and solutions to problems in teaching. This will help the teachers to discuss and practice instructional theories, solve problems that had occurred in the classroom, plan curriculum, get advice, receive encouragement and generally reflect (Vacilotto, 2007). Team teaching is another method to encourage collaboration. In this, the teachers will share their responsibilities in two or many classes and divide subjects between them with one preparing for few subjects and the other for remaining subjects. They may divide their classes based on the performance of the students. It develops the teachers to be more competent in their teaching areas leading to professional development (Lieberman, 2008). It could be practiced by the collegial- support team to promote safer professional development. The fourth approach of co-teaching involves teaching the students by two/more teachers in same classroom. It promotes strength of the teachers and increases learning opportunities for the students (Friend, 2008). It is of many types as one- teaches one-assist, station, parallel and alternative teaching.
